5 Hardwood Floor Refinishing Mistakes Cape Cod Contractors Know to Avoid
Mistake 1: Skipping Acclimation
Wood flooring delivered to a Cape Cod job site has been stored in a climate-controlled warehouse. The boards' moisture content reflects that storage environment, not the installation site. When those boards go directly onto the subfloor without acclimating, they will move as they adjust to the actual humidity of the space. That movement causes cupping, crowning, and gaps that appear weeks after installation.
The fix is simple: let the flooring sit in the installation space for at least 7 to 10 days before install. For wide planks (5 inches and wider), 14 days is better. Stack the boards with spacers between layers to allow air circulation. Measure the moisture content with a reliable meter and do not proceed until the boards are within 2 percent of the subfloor moisture content.
Mistake 2: Not Testing Subfloor Moisture
Cape Cod homes, particularly older ones near the water, can have subfloors with elevated moisture content year-round. A crawl space without adequate vapor barrier, poor drainage around the foundation, or a finished basement with moisture intrusion can push subfloor readings well above the acceptable range for hardwood installation.
Applying finish over a wet subfloor produces results that look acceptable on day one and fail within months. Finish adhesion fails, boards cup, and sometimes mold develops in the worst cases. Always measure subfloor moisture before starting. Address any readings above 10 to 12 percent before proceeding.
Mistake 3: Using Consumer-Grade Products
The Bona product at Home Depot and the Bona Traffic HD at JR Hardwood Supplies are not the same product. Consumer-grade floor finishes are reformulated for DIY ease of use, not maximum performance. On Cape Cod, where humidity puts extra stress on every finish, this difference becomes visible in the first season.
Professional-grade products, including Bona Traffic HD, Bona Mega One, and DuraSeal QuickCoat stain, are only available through authorized distributors. JR Hardwood in Falmouth is the only authorized Bona and DuraSeal distributor on Cape Cod. Using the right product from the start is cheaper than a callback to re-do a job that failed early.
Mistake 4: Skipping Sanding Between Finish Coats
Every coat of finish goes on top of the previous coat. For the new coat to bond properly, it needs a mechanical key: a slightly abraded surface that gives the finish something to grip. Applying a finish coat over an unscuffed, glossy previous coat risks delamination, where the top coat peels away as a sheet.
Between coats, lightly sand or screen the floor with a 100 to 150 grit screen pad or equivalent abrasive. This knocks down any dust nibs and grain raise while creating the mechanical bond. Vacuum thoroughly and wipe with a tack cloth before the next coat. This adds 20 minutes to a coat cycle and prevents hours of remediation work.
Mistake 5: Rushing Dry Times in Summer
Cape Cod summer humidity does not cooperate with tight schedules. A finish coat that dries in 2 hours at 60 percent humidity may still be tacky after 3 hours at 75 percent. Applying the next coat over a finish that has not fully dried causes a range of problems: bubbles, cloudiness, adhesion failures, and an inability to buff out imperfections.
Always confirm dry conditions with a fingernail or cloth test, not just the clock. If you are not sure, wait another 30 minutes. The time saved by rushing never outweighs the time lost to fixing a compromised coat.
