How to Apply DuraSeal QuickCoat Penetrating Stain: A Step-by-Step Guide

By JR · JR Hardwood Supplies March 5, 2026 6 min read

What You Need Before You Start

DuraSeal QuickCoat is an oil-based penetrating stain. Apply it after the final sanding is complete and before any finish coats. The surface must be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, and old finish residue. On Cape Cod in summer, also check ambient humidity before starting. QuickCoat dries best at 40 to 65 percent relative humidity. Above 70 percent, dry times extend and the stain can stay tacky longer than expected.

Gather the following before you begin:

  • DuraSeal QuickCoat in your selected color
  • Lambswool applicator or short-nap roller
  • Rags or cotton towels for wiping excess
  • Stir stick (never shake the can)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Knee pads
  • Paint tray or work bucket

Step 1: Stir the Stain

Stir DuraSeal QuickCoat thoroughly before use. The pigment settles to the bottom of the can during storage. Shaking causes air bubbles, which can result in surface imperfections. Stir slowly and completely, scraping the bottom of the can, until the color is fully uniform.

Step 2: Apply the Stain

Pour a manageable amount into a work tray. Apply the stain with a lambswool applicator or short-nap roller, working with the grain of the wood. Apply generously enough to wet the surface fully without pooling. Work in sections small enough that you can come back to wipe before the stain begins to set, typically 100 to 150 square feet at a time on a normal day.

On hotter Cape Cod days in July and August, the stain may start to dry faster than expected. Work in smaller sections and keep pace with your wipe-back step.

Step 3: Wipe Back the Excess

This step is critical. After applying the stain, wipe off all excess with clean cotton rags, moving with the grain. QuickCoat is a penetrating stain, which means the wood absorbs what it can and the rest must come off the surface. Stain left sitting on top of the wood will dry as a sticky, uneven film that will not accept a topcoat cleanly.

Wipe back within 30 to 60 minutes of application. If you see the stain beginning to pull and drag instead of wipe off cleanly, apply a small amount of fresh stain to the area to re-wet it, then wipe again. Never use mineral spirits to wipe back, as this dilutes the stain and affects the final color.

Step 4: Allow Full Dry Time

QuickCoat dries to a topcoatable surface in 2 to 4 hours under normal conditions (65 to 70 degrees, 40 to 60 percent humidity). In Cape Cod summer humidity above 70 percent, plan for 4 to 6 hours. Do not rush this step. Applying a waterborne topcoat over stain that has not fully dried can cause adhesion failures and lift the stain color.

Test the surface by pressing a clean cloth against the floor. If any color transfers, the stain is not ready.

Step 5: Apply Your Topcoat

DuraSeal QuickCoat is compatible with both oil-based and waterborne topcoats. If using a waterborne finish like Bona Traffic HD, apply a thin seal coat first and allow it to dry fully before full coats. This seal coat locks in the stain and prevents the water in the waterborne finish from disturbing it. Always test compatibility on a small section before proceeding with the full floor.
