DuraSeal Wood Putty: Matching Your Cape Cod Floor Colors

By JR · JR Hardwood Supplies January 8, 2026 4 min read

What Is DuraSeal Wood Putty For?

DuraSeal wood putty is a premixed filler used to fill nail holes, small gaps between boards, minor cracks, and knot imperfections in hardwood floors before applying finish. Applied correctly and matched to the right color, filled areas become nearly invisible after the finish coats go on.

On Cape Cod floors, gaps between boards can be more prominent than in drier climates because the wood moves more through the humidity cycle. Boards expand in summer when humidity is high and contract in winter when heat runs and humidity drops. Older floors, in particular, can develop notable gaps that benefit from a careful putty application.

Before or After Staining?

This is the question that trips up less experienced applicators. The timing of putty application depends on your finish schedule:

  • Staining the floor: Apply putty after staining and allowing the stain to dry. This lets you match the putty color to the finished stain color rather than guessing. Select a putty shade that closely matches the wet stain color on your specific wood species. The putty and the stained wood will dry to a similar tone.
  • Natural or unstained floor: Apply putty after the first seal coat of finish has dried. This gives you a better visual reference for the final color. The first coat often shifts the wood's natural color noticeably.

In both cases, do not apply putty to the raw sanded wood before stain unless you are doing a very large fill and the putty needs maximum adhesion. Putty applied to raw wood tends to absorb stain differently than the surrounding wood, creating a noticeable lighter or darker spot.

How to Choose the Right Color

DuraSeal wood putty is available in a range of colors designed to coordinate with common stain colors and natural wood tones. The key to selection:

  • Test the putty color in a nail hole in a visible location before committing to the whole floor.
  • Putty always dries lighter than it looks when wet.
  • You can mix two putty shades to hit a color between available options.
  • Match to the mid-tone of the floor, not the darkest or lightest grain. This minimizes the visual contrast of the fill under different lighting conditions.

Application Tips

Apply putty with a flexible putty knife, pressing firmly into the hole or gap. Overfill slightly, as the putty shrinks as it dries. Once dry (20 to 30 minutes for small fills), sand lightly with a fine grit (100 or 120) to level the fill with the surrounding floor surface. Remove all putty dust thoroughly before applying finish.

For larger gaps, DuraSeal putty can be applied in two stages, allowing the first fill to dry and shrink before adding a second fill and sanding level. This prevents a sunken appearance as the putty cures fully.
