DuraSeal QuickCoat Colors: Choosing the Right Stain for Your Cape Cod Floor

By JR · JR Hardwood Supplies May 28, 2026 5 min read

What Is DuraSeal QuickCoat?

DuraSeal QuickCoat is an oil-based penetrating stain for hardwood floors. Unlike surface stains that sit on top of the wood, QuickCoat soaks into the grain and bonds with the wood fibers. The result is a natural, rich color that does not peel or flake because it is part of the wood itself.

The "Quick" in QuickCoat refers to dry time. Traditional oil stains can take 8 to 24 hours to dry enough for a topcoat. QuickCoat dries in 2 to 4 hours under normal conditions, which allows Cape Cod contractors to stain and apply a first coat of finish on the same day. On a job where the homeowner needs the house back quickly, that matters.

JR Hardwood Supplies in Falmouth stocks DuraSeal QuickCoat in over 40 colors, the widest selection available on Cape Cod from an authorized distributor.

Popular Colors for Cape Cod Homes

Cape Cod homes span a wide range of aesthetics, from traditional shingle-style cottages to contemporary coastal builds. The stain color you choose should complement the home's character and the wood species you are working with. Here are the colors that JR sees move most often:

  • Natural: A minimal, transparent look that lets the wood's natural character show. Popular on new installs of lighter species like ash and maple.
  • Early American: A warm, medium brown tone that works well on red and white oak. One of the most classic choices for traditional Cape Cod cottages.
  • Special Walnut: A rich medium-dark brown, slightly cooler than Early American. Very popular on white oak, which has become the most requested species on the Cape over the past several years.
  • Classic Gray: A cool gray-brown wash that has remained popular for contemporary coastal interiors. Works best on white oak; can look muddy on red oak with its naturally pink undertone.
  • Dark Walnut: A deep, chocolatey brown. Popular in upscale renovations and new construction where the client wants a dramatic contrast with light walls.
  • Jacobean: Nearly black-brown. Used as an accent or as a mixer with other stains to darken custom blends.

Keep in mind that stain color looks different on different wood species and grit levels. White oak absorbs stain more evenly than red oak. End grain takes stain darker. The same color can look significantly different depending on how fine the final sanding grit was.

How to Choose: Four Questions to Ask

Before committing to a color, work through these four questions:

  1. What species is the floor? Red oak, white oak, pine, maple, and other species each absorb stain differently. If you are not sure, JR can help identify the species and recommend appropriate colors.
  2. What is the overall design direction? Warmer tones (Early American, Special Walnut) work well in homes with cream walls and traditional furnishings. Cooler grays and browns suit contemporary interiors with white trim and muted palettes.
  3. How much natural light does the space get? Dark stains in low-light rooms can make a space feel smaller and heavier. Lighter naturals and early Americans open up north-facing rooms.
  4. What topcoat will you use? Oil-based topcoats add an amber warmth that deepens stain color. Waterborne finishes like Bona Traffic HD are clear and will show the stain color more faithfully.

Always Test Before Committing

The most important rule of stain selection: test on the actual floor before applying the full job. Cut a few small test areas in an inconspicuous spot, apply two or three candidate colors, and let them dry fully before making a decision. Colors look very different wet versus dry, and different in artificial light versus natural light.
