The chemistry, stated plainly

A lot of writing about DriFast, including an earlier version of this site, calls it a waterborne stain. It is not. Bona's data sheet is unambiguous: oil-modified resins in mineral spirits. Clean-up is mineral spirits. The reason it sits so naturally under Bona Traffic HD and Mega ONE is that Bona built it to be compatible with all Bona waterborne systems and all other Bona finish systems, and because it penetrates, stains and seals bare wood in one step so no separate sealer is required.

If you are a contractor who has been told to keep waterborne under waterborne, the rule you actually want is narrower: stay inside a system the manufacturer has validated, and never topcoat a stain that is not fully dry.

A safety note worth repeating

Rags, steel wool or waste soaked with DriFast Stain can spontaneously catch fire if discarded improperly. Bona's instruction is to place them immediately after use in a sealed, water-filled metal container. This applies to DuraSeal QuickCoat and every other oil-based product on the shelf too.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bona DriFast Stain waterborne?
No, and this is a common mistake. Bona's technical data sheet lists DriFast Stain as an oil-modified stain: oil-modified resins, mineral spirits, pigments and driers. You clean up with mineral spirits, not water. What makes it useful under Bona's waterborne finishes is that Bona formulates it to be compatible with all Bona waterborne systems, not that it shares their chemistry.
How long does DriFast Stain take to dry?
2 hours for wood tones under ideal conditions of 60 to 80°F with 35 to 75 percent relative humidity. White needs a minimum of 6 hours. Ebony, Spice Brown, Bark and Cocoa need 12 to 18 hours. High humidity or low temperature extends all of these; more ventilation and airflow shortens them.
How soon after staining can I topcoat?
Bona says to apply sealer or finish after the recommended dry time but within 48 hours of application. That upper limit matters as much as the lower one.
How many colors does DriFast come in and do you stock them?
The line runs 25 wood tones plus White, and all colors can be blended with each other. JR Hardwood stocks the colors Cape Cod contractors ask for most, in quarts and gallons. Call (508) 524-8957 with the specific color and size and we will tell you what is on the shelf.
What is the coverage rate?
800 to 1,000 square feet per gallon. Apply, allow 1 to 3 minutes for penetration, then remove the excess by hand wiping or buffing with an absorbent non-abrasive material.
Can I use DriFast under Bona Traffic HD without a sealer?
Yes. DriFast penetrates, stains and seals bare wood, and Bona's Traffic HD data sheet states that no sealer is needed over a stained floor. This is the main practical reason Cape Cod contractors run the two together.
