DuraSeal QuickCoat
QuickCoat is an oil based penetrating stain. It soaks into the grain rather than sitting on top as a film, so the result reads as colored wood rather than painted wood, and it wears differently. A scratch shows the same color underneath instead of a pale line.
It dries in 2 to 4 hours, considerably faster than traditional oil stains, which is why it dominates professional schedules in the Northeast. Full detail on the QuickCoat page.
Color families in stock
- Neutral and natural. Country White, Natural, Fruitwood, Golden Oak
- Warm mid tones. Special Walnut, Provincial, English Chestnut, Nutmeg
- Dark. Jacobean, Dark Walnut, Ebony, Antique Brown
- Cool and grey. Classic Grey, Weathered Oak, Silvered Grey
Color varies dramatically by species. The same Jacobean on red oak and on white oak are visibly different floors. Test on the actual floor, in an area that will be covered, before committing to the room.
This is the single most common staining mistake. Sanding beyond 100 closes the grain, the stain cannot penetrate, and the result is blotchy washed out color that no number of additional coats will fix. Full sequence in the grit sequence guide.
Bona Red Out
Red oak carries tannins that bleed through a finish as a pink or reddish cast, particularly under white and light grey stains and under waterborne topcoats. It is the reason a white oak look attempted on red oak sometimes comes out disappointingly pink.
Red Out is applied before staining to neutralize and block that bleed. Going light or grey on a red oak floor without it is a gamble. One gallon.
Daly's Wood Bleaching Solution
Sometimes the goal is lighter than the wood naturally is. Daly's is a two part system, Solution A then Solution B, that chemically lightens the wood itself rather than covering it. It is the route to a genuinely pale Scandinavian look on oak, and the fix for a floor darkened by age, sun or a previous dark stain that sanding alone will not fully lift.
Both solutions are caustic. Ventilation, gloves and eye protection are required, and the floor must be fully neutralized and dried before any finish goes on. If you have not run the process before, call and we will walk through the sequence rather than have you improvise on a customer's floor.
